You guys are touring Europe right now, how’s it going? How are the crowds?
Great actually. We have certainly had our fair share of “sedate crowds” on the mainland over the years but this time it’s been great. I think this has been the best reaction we had in places like Germany. We’re definitely not the stereotypical North America that had its best shows in Europe.
It’s been a crazy couple of years for Fucked Up, with “Chemistry of Common Life” bringing you from punk rock underground to global attention, that lawsuit vs Camel cigarettes, and “David Comes to Life” happily stomping it’s way into the Billboard charts, and yet you’ve still managed to be as prolific as ever. How has this time been for you?
It has been the greatest time of my life. Florida codes bank I’ve got to play places like China, Russia, Japan etc. I have shared the stage with some of my heroes and to top it all off my wife gave birth to our baby during that time too. Which is where things get complicated. I mean, here I am living this dream I had my whole life but it can only come through touring and, thus, at the expense of my relationship with this little person that I am supposed to care for who I love more than anything. It’s kind of bitter sweet and it’s the reason I can’t see myself doing this for too much longer.
A band featuring three guitarists that play hardcore punk combined with prog / post-rock and a lot of massive, slow-burning riffs, writing a “Rock Opera”, you’ ve managed to avoid an easy genre tag. Order Doxycycline (Which is a good thing.) How do you describe FuckedUp musically, and what bands do you feel you have most in common with?
Do you mean who do I consider our peers? I mean, we hang out with all sorts of types of bands but I don’t really know any other bands that are into the same stuff. Which is not to say that we are doing something more advanced or anything like that. We are simply more nerdy about other shit than other bands are.
The storyline of “David Comes To Life” is set in Thatcher’s Britain, and lyrically is pretty relevant right now with the Tories back in power. There was a year between the UK elections and the record’s release, was it a deliberate choice to tell this particular story at this time?
I don’t think so. I think that period is so interesting and has kinda been a part of our universe since the band started. We were obsessed with the music of the time and the politics. It was this period lasix price that really set the tone for Vardenafilo levitra the world we live in now. I think now we are pulling the curtain back and seeing how much of our world was shaped by the era. Even supposed ends of the era like the election of Clinton in the US and Blair in the UK now, in retrospect, seem like a slight dip to the left but continuing in the same dark direction.
Have you managed to catch any news coverage of what’s been going on in the UK over the past few weeks?
Yeah, I watched the riot coverage. It is really sad that it has to get Levitra reviews to the point where people feel they have no other recourse other than destruction. The thing is, riots are not something that should happen when democracy is broken. Hopefully this can serve a positive purpose in its wake and some of the root causes can be addressed. Damian, you once said your Dad was from Portsmouth originally, before moving to Canada, it must be pretty cool to be playing here finally Buy antibiotics online without prescription. Online Drugstore.? And where in Portsmouth was he from? (Also, there’s a few of us who’d be up for showing you round if you like)
I am so happy to get to visit finally. buy drugs online I’m going to call my dad and get some spots to check out. I would love a tour guy… and someone to help check the local flora.
Fucked Up have a reputation for not only pushing the boundaries on record, but for some intense and epic live shows too. (The internet tells rumours of a 12 hour set once!?) What should punters in Portsmouth expect from a Fucked Up show?
I try not to promise anything with the show. I want it to just unfold naturally. I can promise that I will try my best to make sure people leave with a memory.
Last time I saw you, you were a good ten feet into the crowd, covered in peanut butter. For a uniquely British theme, have you considered trying Marmite?
I think the peanut butter thing was one of the dumbest things I have ever done. I could have killed someone with a peanut allergy. I would definitely do it with Marmite if you can promise me that no one is allergic to it hahaha.
And one, last, totally not serious question. My editor has a weird obsession with Capybaras, which are a type of giant rodent. What are your favourite animals?
Pugs… yeah I love them.
