Joseph Vaughan was phenomenal as the lead and I cannot help but believe that his future is secured on the stage. He demonstrated the shy, awkwardness of Billy but shone with the, sometimes complex, dance routines. But most impressive of all was a Pompey lad mastering the County Durham accent! The scenes between Billy and his best friend Michael (played by Jaime Cartwright) were touching and believable with Jaime putting in an admirable performance as the confused young lad with the penchant for his Mum’s dresses.
As with all amateur (and indeed professional) shows, some performances were superior to others and I feel the role of Mrs Wilkinson should have been given to a stronger dancer/singer. But, that said, overall they all did the school proud. The policemen, the miners and the ballet class kept the show bound together and provided some comedy relief. The finale of police and miners united by tutus was particularly amusing.
