Portsmouth Greyhound Stadium

Portsmouth Greyhound Stadium closed in April of this year. It had been threatened with closure for many years but had been lucky in the past with last minute reprieves. This time, they were not so lucky.

The Greyhound Stadium was built in 1931 and was one of the oldest in the country. It was a landmark to the left of the M275 on entry into the city, albeit a slightly brown and tatty one. The site, at Tipner, has been earmarked for redevelopment but the final plans have yet to be finalised.

The greyhounds had to be rehomed, staff had to be redeployed to other locations and Portsmouth is to be left with yet another demolition site, although, judging by the state of the site when I visited they may not need to bother paying the professionals….
